Description

Even though the school year is over, fans of Centennial High School's production of Eurydice can watch it one last time during a one-night-only double performance on June 14.

The original fall 2023 show offered viewers a unique, one of a kind experience because the musical score was written by two of the high school's seniors.

Eurydice was one of the most impactful shows of our season, and the one we are constantly told people regret not seeing or want to see again,” Centennial High School Theater Director Megan Hardgrave said. “The intimate seating puts the audience up close to the emotional delivery of the actors. Visually, this show is stunning.”

Written by playwright Sarah Ruhl, the show is an adaptation of the Greek myth of Eurydice and her struggle with the grief of losing her father, her love for her husband, Orpheus, and an existence in the Underworld and Earth.

Besides the music, the staging was also produced by Centennial High School’s drama students.

Set designer Kylie Rasmussen, sound designers Mary Morreale and Eve O’Donnell and lighting designer Jamesyn Whitlock worked together to create an environment they say is soothing and nostalgic. The set, along with seating on stage, feet away from the actors, adds an intimate audience experience, they said.

Seniors Andrew Barré and Luke Cooper, both musicians and songwriters, wrote the 8-song score and will perform it during the play.

“I had heard Andrew and Luke’s original music previously and knew that their style of music was exactly what I wanted for the show,” Hardgrave said. “They composed music that was not only emotionally responsive but also perfectly personified each character. In fact, the music became one of the most beloved parts of the original production.”

Plans are in the works to record the original score and release the music in time for the June performance.

Shows are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on June 14 at the Centennial High School Performing Arts Center, 5050 Mallory Lane in Franklin.

Tickets are $15 and are limited to 75 per show. They are available online at www.chstheater.ludus.com.
